What is a Health Information Exchange?

You may have heard the term “Health Information Exchange” and have been wondering what it is, what it involves and what it means for the aged care industry.

The simple answer is that a Health Information Exchange allows the electronic movement of healthcare information to occur between disparate IT systems whilst maintaining the meaning of the information being exchanged.

iCare’s Health Information Exchange is called 'HealthPoint'.

In aged care it enables healthcare professionals to safely and efficiently share data about a person. The data that is collected and shared creates a complete view of a person’s health record enhancing your ability to make informed decisions to provide the highest quality care.

This is revolutionary for the aged care industry as sharing information and having a consolidated view of a person’s health profile was near impossible when utilising a paper based system.

Chris Gray - Managing Director, iCare

Medical Director interfaces with iCare

Medical Director and iCare are completing work on an interface that will allow information from Medical Director to be transferred into iCare’s Clinical, Care and Medication Solution. This is an example of a Health Information Exchange at work.

Once enabled, information the doctor enters into Medical Director can now be passed through HealthPoint and into iCare. This enables a GP to use their preferred software, and reduces the need to duplicate documentation. The result is a consolidated view of up to date health information in a single electronic health record with the iCare system.

The interface between HCN’s Medical Director and iCare’s Clinical, Care & Medication Management Solution is expected to be released by the end of the year.

iCare will be conducting a survey with all current customers to assess the readiness of your GP’s to use this interface. The survey will be made available by the end of August. For more information please contact iCare on 03 9652 8100.

Have you considered using a mobility device to capture resident information at the point of care?

iCare is enabled to operate on a mobility device so care staff can capture progress notes, clinical assessments or review a care plan at the point of care.

If you would like the opportunity to test drive iCare on a mobility device, Panasonic are offering aged care facilities the opportunity for a free trial of the Toughbook H1. (To learn more about the Toughbook H1 click here.)

If you are interested in participating please register your details at www.toughbook.com.au/testdriveH1 and a Panasonic representative will contact you.
