eHealth at work
One of the key areas of iCare’s focus is the move by the Australian Government towards the introduction of electronic health records.
Aged care has already begun the move from capturing simple care documentation, and transcending into an environment of a single person health
record. The person centred electronic health record will not only encapsulate the clinical records from the aged care facility, but will also
electronically combine GP records and the electronic medication charts using pharmacy data. This will enable nursing and care staff to view
internal and external health information within one single application. This is clearly in line with the Government’s strategic objective to
create electronic health records.
In this issue I would like to focus on how GP records will complete part of the person centre electronic health record and how this is an example
of eHealth at work.
Medical Director 3 / iCare Interface
HCN* and iCare identified that improved patient outcomes may be achieved when information can be shared between each organisation’s software solutions.
Specifically, care and nursing staff rely on the information, advice and instructions from GPs when attending to the daily care needs of the people
in their care.
HCN and iCare have created an interface which will enable GP information to be transferred from the Medical Director database into the iCare database.
The objective of this interface is to:
- provide a simpler method to communicate and transfer health information for the user base of both Medical Director and iCare
- store the GP information in the iCare database once matched to the correct individual health record of the associated resident in the correct
aged care facility
- display the GP information to the iCare end-user.
The MD3 / iCare interface will provide a more detailed picture of a resident’s true health condition and, in combination with iCare’s Medication
Management software, it completes the person centred aged care health record.
This sharing of information between disparate systems to create a complete view, illustrates how eHealth systems have the potential to unlock
substantially greater quality, safety and efficiency benefits for aged care and the wider health community.
iCare’s electronic health record that is in use by aged care providers will support the Government initiatives of electronic health records for
Australians by 2012.
