Governance arrangements for the national healthcare identifier service
The Council of Australian Governments met on 7th December and completed another key step in the development of a national e-health system,
with the signing of an agreement to provide the legislative, governance and administrative framework for national healthcare identifiers.
In previous issues of the eHealth in Aged Care Newsletter we have explained that the unique 16 digit number, the healthcare identifier,
allocated to each Australian resident accessing healthcare in Australia, will enable the secure transmission of an individual’s health
information.
This framework that the Government has agreed upon will underpin the future development of a nationally consistent electronic health system,
ensuring better medical records for patients while protecting individual privacy. Key examples of the use of health identifiers in aged care
include the linking of medication information, GP records, hospital discharge summaries and finance systems.
From 2010 to 2012, the federal, state and territory governments will contribute a total of $218 million to support this project.
The Healthcare Identifier service will commence operation in July 2010 and iCare is currently completing development work to ensure our Clinical,
Care and Medication Management software is ready for the changes.
