Are you aware of the benefits of using Aged Care Online Claiming?
Over the past several years many aged care providers have embraced eHealth and implemented electronic systems. Feedback has proved that tangible benefits
are being achieved and the use of Aged Care Online Claiming is proof of this.
18 months since the implementation of the Aged Care Funding Instrument (ACFI) the uptake of online claiming and the move towards a paperless system has
been significant as aged care providers continue to adopt electronic systems. 76% of residential aged care providers are submitting their ACFI claims to
Medicare via online channels.
Aged care providers are recognising major benefits by utilising Aged Care Online Claiming which streamlines business processes and improves efficiencies and
outcomes. This means a reduction in both duplicate processes and completing paper forms. The ACFI reconciliation process also becomes easier, as does the access
to the information captured. Online claiming is a great example of information technology being embraced to deliver efficiency gains via the effective use of resources.

NEHTA's eHealth strategic plan released
NEHTA has released their strategic plan for 2009-2012 to clearly show stakeholders across the health sector the directions they are taking to drive the take-up
and adoption of e-health nationally.
The plan outlines 4 strategic priorities that define NEHTA’s role in adoption and implementation of eHealth initiatives:
1. Urgently develop the essential foundations required to enable e-health.
This priority stresses the need to deliver essential e-health services such as Healthcare Identifiers (HI), secure messaging and authentication, and a clinical
terminology and information service.
2. Coordinate the progression of the priority e-health solutions and processes.
Some e-health solutions and processes provide the greatest opportunity to improve health practice and deliver benefit. Priorities include referrals and discharge,
pathology and diagnostic imaging and medications management.
3. Accelerate the adoption of e-health.
It is critical to increase the awareness and uptake of e-health initiatives by the various stakeholder groups, through collaboration and communication programs,
incentives and implementation support.
4. Lead the progression of e-health in Australia.
This priority reflects that NEHTA has a significant role in leading the direction of the current and future state of e-health in Australia, including future
initiatives and the impacts on privacy and policy.
This is an exciting time for the aged care industry as it will not only benefit from these initiatives but will play a crucial role in helping to achieve them.
It is important that you are aware and understand NEHTA’s strategic plan to ensure you prepared. Over the next few issues we will be addressing areas of the strategic
plan such as Healthcare Identifiers (HI), which impact the aged care industry directly.
