The AMA calls for priority funding for eHealth adoption
Last week the Australian Medical Association (AMA) was quoted in the IT section of The Australian saying that they “fully support the roll-out of eHealth initiatives in order to integrate systems,
reduce fragmentation and duplication, streamline service delivery and improve quality and safety.” The AMA called for priority funding for eHealth adoption, starting
with e-prescribing and electronic sharing of essential patient information.
We have been vigilant in presenting the views quoted from various bodies within the healthcare industry, such as the Health and Hospital Reform Commission (NHHRC),
Pharmaceutical Society of Australia (PSA) and the National eHealth Transition Authority (NEHTA), to paint a picture for aged care providers.
The aged care industry already has the ability to share essential patient information via electronic systems. There are already electronic tools that facilitate
access to and retrieval of clinical data to provide safer, more timely, efficient, effective, equitable, person-centered care.
For example, Medical Director 3 (MD3) will have an interface with iCare’s Clinical, Care & Medication Management Solution which enables information the doctor
enters into MD3 to be passed into iCare’s Clinical, Care and Medication Management Solution. This, coupled with the ability to link a resident’s medication information
from the pharmacy, creates the aged care electronic health record and a complete view of a resident’s health information.
The value of having a person’s care, clinical, medication and GP content accessible via one application cannot be understated which the AMA highlights in its
support for eHealth initiatives. Aged care is at the forefront of eHealth. If you haven’t already, now is the time to embrace it.
