Benevolent Aged Care wins awards

In issue 8 of the eHealth in Aged Care Newsletter we highlighted the leadership and achievements that have been shown by the aged care industry in the area of eHealth. This again rang true when Benevolent Aged Care recently won the Outstanding Business of the Year and the Stanwell Major Business of the Year awards in the Rockhampton Regional Development and Ergon Energy Business Excellence Awards.

Benevolent Aged Care have embraced eHealth and implemented an electronic system to manage their clinical and care data. By utilising technology they streamlined their processes to improve information management, communication and time management. Not only has this resulted in better care for their residents but the impact has been felt across their entire business and hence one of the key reasons they were recognised with two awards.

eHealth is transforming the way the aged care industry operates and it is examples like this that illustrates to the wider health care community that aged care is leading the way.

Chris Gray - Managing Director, iCare

What are the benefits Benevolent Aged Care are experiencing from eHealth?

  • Improvement in managing information - an organisation cannot manage what they can’t measure which was the case when using a manual system. An electronic system has allowed us to record and retrieve useful data from one place which has been paramount in making clinical decisions.

  • Improved resident outcomes - identification of resident care issues is much faster. Results in less adverse symptoms, lower virulence of infections and care staff are more responsive to resident care needs

  • Improved communications – we are operating with very scarce Registered Nurse hours. The RNs come on duty and are able to view a handover for 115 clients, which allows them to identify issues, plan their priorities and delegate. Prior they would have to walk to 6 different buildings to get this information and the old manual handover sheets were largely lacking in content. The ability to link progress notes to handover has been seen as one of the most useful features of the system.

  • Improved time management - in particular for nursing staff that are the clinical decision makers as we are geographically spread with 6 sections of the facility. Now all the information is in one place and can be accessed from anywhere. There is also no need to enter data in multiple places or to run multiple databases to track Care Plan Reviews, Continence Assessments, Pain Assessments, ACFIs etc.

  • Improved risk management – everything is transparent which allows us to easily identify errors, staff performance and education needs. Director of Nursing and Registered Nurses are able to monitor resident care by reading notes.

  • Improved reporting and compliance with documentation - moving from a manual system to an electronic system has allowed us to process map and review/refine processes to ensure we are compliant across all areas.
